College Math Tutor, Economics Tutor, Engineering Tutor – When no one else can, Newcastle will…
Guess what. Starting with your first day of high school, you have a new best friend: the college guidance counselor. Although your relationship with him/her won’t truly begin for another year or so, you should make it your top priority to not only find out who your particular counselor is, but to make a strong and lasting first impression. The guidance counselor is your liaison to college admissions officers. S/he is someone who needs to be your ally and proponent, not a peripheral, abstract member of your school’s bureaucracy with whom you share no relationship.
But there are more than simply diplomatic reasons due to which you should maintain close ties with your counselor. S/he is also an expert in the field of college admissions, which is primarily why they have the job in the first place. Guidance counselors are personal experts on college application essays, resumes, transcripts, and basically anything related to helping you select and be admitted into a college.
Now, while you only have one guidance counselor, your guidance counselor may have tens if not hundreds of students for whom they are responsible. You are not inherently special and deserving of special treatment when application season rolls around. If you want special attention and advisory, earn your counselor’s respect and honor early on. Don’t be a pesky parasite.
