College Math Tutor, Economics Tutor, Engineering Tutor – When no one else can, Newcastle will…
In 2010, 4 million high school students took courses online. Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn predicted last month in the Washington Post that by 2019, 50% of all high school classes will be taken online. And some states are even experimenting with online-only high schools.
Why the sudden shift from traditional classrooms? For cash-strapped schools, the biggest motivation is cost. “Blended learning” means that students learn primarily at a computer, and teachers guide and supervise rather than setting each day’s lessons. As a result, each teacher can help more students and — voila! — fewer teachers need to work at each school, potentially saving districts millions of dollars a year.
For students, technology-based learning can be more fun. It might feel more natural, since today’s students grew up surrounded by computers. Online learning is intensely personal, allowing students to go at their own pace and spend their time on their own needs. That has the potential to transform the playing field for students who struggle in overcrowded classrooms or in schools with under-performing peers or teachers. And now students will be able to take advanced or specialized courses that schools previously could not afford to offer.
Of course, schools must be aware of potential pitfalls. Online-only courses provide fewer opportunities to work with other students. A student might get less personal attention from the teacher. And there’s always carpal tunnel syndrome.
At Newcastle Tutors and Newcastle Prep, we believe that online learning is a powerful tool for students to achieve excellence. But we know that at the end of the day, online learning itself is just a method. What matters even more is the teacher and the presentation of the course material.
We are proud to be at the vanguard of online learning. Newcastle offers students the opportunity to learn at almost any time from the comfort of their home. And most importantly, we offer the very best and brightest Ivy League tutors and coaches, with top scores, top qualifications, and extensive experience.
