College Math Tutor, Economics Tutor, Engineering Tutor – When no one else can, Newcastle will…
In its 2011 version, the National Survey of Student Engagement found that the vast majority of students don’t implement new study strategies during their time in college. Whether you are a high school, college, or even graduate student, you should always be working to improve your study skills. Here are a few learning strategies the NSSE highly recommends:
1) Take careful notes while reading course materials
Only 58% of college seniors implement this strategy, but it can make the difference between remembering most of a reading’s key points and remembering almost nothing. When you take notes from your readings, you change from being a passive learner to an active learner. By reading and writing, you offer your brain an additional way to assimilate new information. You will be more likely to understand and remember your reading.
2) Create your own examples to help you study
Implementing this strategy will not just make you an active learner, but will take you to a higher level of active learning. When you generate your own examples, you engage creative learning processes and synthesize different pieces of information. This embeds your understanding deeper in your memory and provides greater understanding. Of course, getting creative and implementing this strategy is not always easy. Perhaps that’s why only 53% of college seniors often use it.
3) Ask for help
Sometimes you need someone else’s assistance to understand a new concept or remind you of an old one. You can ask friends, a TA, or the professor. Teachers and professors usually hold regular office hours to offer students help. Use this resource! Of course, if you’re like most students, you might find yourself needing a lot of help – more than a TA or professor can offer. This situation can feel discouraging, but don’t let it get you down. That’s a great time to contact us at Newcastle Tutors or Newcastle Prep and speak with an Ivy League coach who can get you exactly the help you need. Good luck!
