By the 2004-2005 school year, The National Center for Education Statistics discovered that 37 percent of school districts offered technology-supported distance education courses.  Enrollment in this combination of two-way videos and online tools was estimated to be 506,950, a remarkable 60% increase over just two years before.  As the impressive results rolled in, online education grew correspondingly.

In the 2007-2008 school year, the Sloan Consortium produced estimates that over one million students were enrolled in online courses.  A government report on online education attributed distance education’s popularity to “its potential for providing more flexible access to content and instruction at any time, from any place.”
