The Edge to Get Ahead

Student supplementing learning the right way - online.Have you been looking for a supplement for your learning that will really boost your grades? The U.S . Department of Education recently released the results of a meta-analysis of studies on the efficacy of different teaching methods. The study combed through over one-thousand independently conducted studies and analyzed those which were found to fit their very selective criteria. They found, unsurprisingly, that students who learned primarily through online tutoring courses fared no worse than traditional face-to-face taught students. The real gains, however, were to be found in blended learning environments.

When students combined traditional face-to-face learning with supplementary online studying, the Department of Education found “significant” gains in student performance. The report further speculates that much of this is because “…online tutoring is much more conducive to the expansion of learning time than is face-to-face instruction.”  John R. Bourne, executive director of the Sloan Consortium added that he felt the study was quite significant, and believed that the study will be a powerful tool in persuading people of the quality of online education.

The conclusion of the study asked for colleges and learning institutions to take note, and broaden their educational offerings to include online courses, which can offer more opportunities for experiential learning than can face-to-face education. Importantly, the report did not stress a complete shift to online tutoring. Significant gains were found only when students learned in a blended environment of both face-to-face and online tutoring. What this suggests, ultimately, is that online tutoring is a statistically significant way to help boost grades and enhance learning. We certainly agree.

The study does sound great. Me and one of my students have had a lot of success with supplementing our face-to-face sessions with scheduled Facebook chats and email to work on essays.
