Help Your Tutor Help You

Different Learning Styles Require Different Tutoring StylesHave you ever been in a heated debate with another student about whether or not a particular teacher was effective in their teaching methods?  For some reason you absorb almost nothing your respective teacher says, having to review your notes numerous times before finally understanding the material, while the other student ‘just gets it.’  It is probable that the teacher isn’t necessarily good or bad, but rather that the learning method which works best for you is not compatible with the professor’s teaching model.  This is also true of tutors; a tutor that is effective for one student may be completely futile for another student.

To get the most out of any learning session, you should familiarize yourself with the different learning styles to discover which one works best for you:

Visual/Verbal – Students who are visual and verbal learners will benefit from professors who use PowerPoint slides and write notes on the bulletin as they lecture.  One common strategy utilized by these type of learners is making flash cards.

Visual/Nonverbal – If you are a visual and nonverbal learner, you will comprehend information best when it is presented through graphs and charts.  A great tool to use is Microsoft’s OneNote which lets you take notes just as you would in a notebook but with advanced tools to draw graphs and shapes.

Tactile/Kinesthetic – A learner of this style will profit from hands-on activities and physical engagement.  Students of this sort should sit near the front of the class to benefit from a teacher who mostly lectures.

Auditory/Verbal – These students learn orally through lectures and group discussions.  A great strategy for such students is to create study groups (find a “study buddy”) and/or to record class lectures.

Before signing on for a tutor, make it clear how you learn best so that you get the most out of your studying.  Online college tutoring is geared toward tailoring a service to you by using available graphs and charts, example problem sets, and the expertise of your tutor.
