Last week marked the 10th year of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement. The survey received responses from over 400,000 students across 47 states to learn about classroom and campus experiences, as well as “deep learning” techniques –meaning if a student is able to apply information learned and develop a more cultured worldview. The results of the survey indicated that community colleges are doing a poor job. Less than half of the respondents claimed they “included diverse perspectives in class discussions,” “learned something new that changed their viewpoint about an issue,” and “put together ideas or concepts from different courses when completing assignments.” Without these assets, it’s no wonder that students struggle when finals week arrives.
